Echo's disappearance broke the spell of intrigue her presence cast over the competitors, who filtered out from the aged clock tower with an anxious vigor.

Vulcan wound his way through the streets aimlessly, traversing their infinite depths with no more direction than a blind man in a forest. Uncertainty tingled on the tips of his frayed nerves. His flanks still throbbed painfully; the ache of his fall refused to be dispelled. The thought of the sickness did little to calm his newfound and utterly alien fear.

Maybe it's all a lie, he told himself. Just an attempt to pluck at someone's heartstrings.

He laughed softly.

Someone is going to have their heart plucked at this morning.

It took him some time for him to recall Echo's directive. He knew that the swamp was quite a ways out, so he made straight for the bog. The morning seemed eerily calm as he slunk through the long shadows. Night's departure had sent the deadly creatures of darkness away into the skeletal remains of the city, but a whole chorus of creatures was slated to take their place. The intermission between darkness and light was a brief time of quiet.

Vulcan paused as he sensed an uncanny presence in the air. A wisp of darkness twirled hurriedly through the sunlight, swooping down to hover a short distance from his muzzle.

Your foe awaits, it whispered into his mind. He stands like a man, but is no man. He sees the world, yet has no eyes. His heart beats, yet carries no blood.
Riddles? You are absurd.
His name is Jeth, a creature of cloth. Remember: Return first, no matter how broken you may be.

The wisp shot away into the darkness.

A fair distance away, a humanoid figure trudged through the ruins. A faint electrical hum hovered about the creature, whose metal claws glinted with the light of the occasional spark. His body was formed of cloth, not flesh, and great holes of blackness stood where eyes might normally appear. A pair of aviator goggles clung to its head, complemented by a red scarf wrapped around its neck. It- or, shall we say, he- moved with a peculiar gait. There was arrogance, yes, but also an unnatural rhythm, as if he were not quite alive, but rather merely mimicking the motions of life. He moved with soft footfalls, standing tall in the city that had been brought so low.

The wisp appeared from the shadows, floating gently down in front of who must be Jeth.

Your foe is dark as night, yet quick as the crow's flight. His eyes are of amber and blue, and they gleam from the darkness at you. He is Vulcan, a creature of dark. Return before he, lest you fail.

Jeth muttered under his breath in understanding as the wisp rocketed off into the clouds. He glanced back and forth between his sparking claws and the hazy horizon as he thought. The creature he faced was a powerful-looking one, which he had instantly taken as an affront to his own strength. Cutting it down would be a challenge.

He turned slightly to angle towards the swamp, pondering all the while. Ploys sprung up in his mind, but none seemed quite right for the task at hand. A weapon would not do the trick, for it would be swatted out of his grasp before long. A trap might work, or it could simply enrage his foe.

Something clicked in the ragged head of his, though, and he grinned.

Now we're moving. Been having some trouble with writing all of this, but I've got my drafts nearly completed. It'll all be up in due time.
